Winners of the 2021 RADM Sumner Shapiro Scholarship Contest Announced

Intelligence Specialist First Class Victoria DeBernardis serves as an aviation intelligence instructor assigned to Naval Aviation Warfighting Development Center (NAWDC). In that capacity, she is responsible for developing training exercises to prepare intelligence officers and intelligence specialists for deployment. She is currently pursuing a bachelor’s degree in intelligence studies at American Military University. Upon graduation, she intends to continue postgraduate studies while seeking a commission through the Naval Intelligence Warrant Officer program to specialize in the human intelligence (HUMINT) career field.
Petty Officer Natasha Mohr currently serves aboard USS Bataan (LHD-5) as one of three first class intelligence specialists who qualified as a fleet intelligence watch analyst. She also qualified as a member of the ship's combat systems training team and damage control training team. She was previously assigned to USS Nimitz (CVN-68), where she served as a red database manager and SNOOPIE Team photographer. She is completing a Bachelor of Arts degree in intelligence studies through American Military University.
Ethan Husmann, a rising senior at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, is pursuing a major in aerospace engineering major, with a minor in computer science minor. He also has an interest in computing, networking, and software execution within a cyber security context. As an undergraduate researcher in Raytheon Technologies Fellowship Program, he has been gaining hands-on experience using python and MongoDB to build a database, and Proxmox as a virtualization platform to set up secure virtual machines to interact with potentially malicious software in a secure environment. He also participated in Virginia Tech’s Rocketry Club, where he worked as CAD Design Lead and Vehicle Systems Engineer to develop a solid propellant rocket that competed at the Spaceport America Cup competition. He has begun the process to obtain a TS/SCI clearance and intends to transition after graduation next spring to full time work with Raytheon.
*Ethan is a three-time winner of the Vice Admiral Donald D. Engen Scholarship, and the first winner of the CWO4 (Ret) Gene and Kimberly Maguire Scholarship.
