Announcing The Naval Intelligence Professionals  Rear Admiral Sumner Shapiro Scholarship Program for Academic Year 2023-2024

The Naval Intelligence Professionals (NIP) is a tax-exempt educational and charitable foundation. Through the NIP Foundation, NIP recognizes excellence in naval and maritime-associated intelligence through awards for professional achievement, an essay contest, and the Rear Admiral Sumner Shapiro Scholarship Program. Eligible scholarship candidates are dependent children (under 24 years of age) of regular and reserve Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard officer and enlisted intelligence personnel, both active duty and retired, pursuing an undergraduate degree. One scholarship is endowed specifically for active duty enlisted Sailors and Marines.

Seven individual $5000 scholarships are available for the 2023-2024 academic year:

• Captain Richard W. Bates Scholarship
• Captain George J. O’Donnell, Jr., Scholarship
• Commander Dan F. Shanower Scholarship
• Captain (Select) Kurt William Juengling Scholarship
• Captain Anthony D. Sesow Scholarship
• CWO4 (Ret) Gene and Kimberly Maguire Scholarship

The Sesow Scholarship is specifically designated for active duty USN, USMC, and USCG enlisted personnel serving in intelligence-related assignments. Applicants can be enrolled full-time (12 or more credit hours) or part-time toward an accredited associate’s or bachelor’s degree program. This scholarship may be shared between two successful candidates.

The Maguire Scholarship is newly vested by a NIP member who served most of his career in the Naval Reserve Intelligence Program, and whose dependent children benefited from the NIP Scholarship Program. It is now open to military members or their dependents, in both the active and reserve component.

The remaining five scholarships will be awarded to dependent children as outlined above; one application is all that is required to apply for all of these scholarships.

Selection of all scholarship awardees will be based on: academic achievement (grade point average), extra-curricular activities including community service and work, and career objectives that fall within the broad umbrella of national security. Candidates may optionally include ACT/SAT scores, if desired. These criteria indicate past and potential academic performance and career goals consistent with the NIP charter. Scholarships will be awarded to the best qualified applicants in the dependent and active duty categories, respectively.

All scholarship applications, including official transcripts, optional SAT and/or ACT scores, and command endorsement (active duty applicants competing for the Sesow Scholarship, only) must be received by the NIP Scholarship Committee by 15 April 2023. Applications received after that date will not be considered. Applicants are responsible for the completeness and timeliness of their submissions and are highly encouraged to actively ensure timely delivery of official academic transcripts.

Applicants are highly encouraged to electronically transfer transcripts to nipscholarships@gmail.com for rapid receipt by the NIP Scholarship Committee; some universities offer electronic transfer as a service and some use organizations, such as studentclearinghouse.org. For enlisted applicants only: Submission of a command endorsement letter is required. A brief statement signed by the LCPO, Department Head, XO or CO, citing a compelling reason for the scholarship award will suffice and should be uploaded by the applicant to the website.
