TAPS: CDR “Charlie” Kane, U.S. Navy (Ret) passed away on 2 July 2021 at age 92

Charles "Charlie" Kent Kane, a retired Naval Commander and long-time resident of Alexandria, Virginia, died peacefully at his home on July 2021.

Charlie was born in Princeton, West Virginia on 19 September 1928. His secondary education was at Riverside Military Academy, Gainesville, Georgia, and he earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from West Virginia University with post-graduate work at the Defense Intelligence School and Catholic University.

Charlie entered the Navy via Officer Candidate School and embarked on a career as a Special Duty Officer (Naval Intelligence). He served on three aircraft carriers, the last of which was the USS Forrestal. His career began with the National Security Agency and culminated at the Defense Intelligence Agency. After his retirement from the Navy, Charlie became the business manager at St. Agnes School and then business and advertising manager of The Retired Officers Association (TROA) before retiring as the Deputy Comptroller from TROA.

Charlie and Carol were world travelers with some of their expeditions taking them to Russia, China, Australia, New Zealand, Europe, Greece, Turkey, Vancouver, and countless US destinations. Charlie was an avid golfer, but the ever-desirable hole-in-one eluded him.

Charlie is survived by his two daughters, Melissa "Li" Evans Kane, Elizabeth "Betsy" Clarke Kane Wilson; his son-in-law, Steve Curtiss; his grandson, Samuel Kane Wilson; and Betsy's life partner, John Richard Beauchamp. Charlie is predeceased by his wife of 50 years, Carol Furman Kane; his sister and brother, Elizabeth Ellison and William Kane; and his parents.

Funeral services and burial will be held at Christ Church in Old Town Alexandria, where he was married, his daughters and grandson were baptized and where Betsy was married. Charlie and Carol belonged to Christ Church for decades and he served as an usher, a teller, and vestry member at the church. Services will be at 3 p.m. on 19 July 19 2021 at 118 N. Washington St.
