TAPS: Mrs. Eleanor “Jimmie” Shapiro, 97, died peacefully on 3 November

Mrs. Eleanor “Jimmie” Shapiro died peacefully on 3 November. She was 97 years old.  Jimmie, as she was known to all, is the widow of RADM Sumner "Shap" Shapiro (USNA ’49).  Jimmie was an exceptional woman admired by everyone.  She was known for her many stories of life as a Navy spouse and had wonderful tales of living overseas in the UK and in the USSR.

The Shapiros were active supporters of NIP - in fact, the NIP scholarship program bears their name.

RADM Shapiro was commissioned as a Surface Warfare Officer and served several tours on surface ships, transferring to the Special Duty, Intelligence designator in 1956. He was the 51st Director of Naval Intelligence, serving from 1978 to 1982. RADM Shapiro preceded his wife in death in November 2006.

Funeral and services for Jimmie will be private. She will be buried at the Naval Academy with her husband.
