TAPS: Darryl "Darry" A. Demaris, USN-Ret.

01 February 2017. CAPT Darryl "Darry" A. Demaris, USN-Ret., died peacefully at the Arleigh Burke Pavilion, Vinson Hall Retirement Community in Northern Virginia.

Darryl was born in Ocean City, NJ, on April 7, 1930, and is a 1952 graduate of Drexel University. He would have been 86.

Darry graduated from Naval Intelligence School in 1954, and spent 30 years in the US Navy as a Naval Intelligence Officer, achieving the rank of Captain in 1975. He holds the Navy Commendation Medal, with one gold star, the National Defense Service Medal, and the Vietnam Service Medal, and was awarded the Legion of Merit for his final assignment at the US Pentagon. Capt. DeMaris retired from the Navy in 1982, and subsequently spent time on his many hobbies: traveling, flying kites, collecting and displaying Lionel model trains, and listening to classical music. He loved the game of bridge, and achieved the level of Silver Life Master in contract bridge.

CAPT DeMaris was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur McLaury DeMaris and Reba Burdsall DeMaris, and his favorite aunt, Jesse Jean Yaeger. CAPT DeMaris is survived by his wife of 63 years, Mary Johnston DeMaris, his son Michael DeMaris , and his daughter Laurie DeMaris.

A gathering and celebration of his life will be held Fri. Feb 10 at Murphy Funeral Home, 1102 W. Broad St., Falls Church, VA, from 2-4 pm.

His family offers special thanks to the staff of Arleigh Burke Pavilion and Vinson Hall for their care and support.

The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Navy Marine Coast Guard Residence Fund or the American Heart Association.
