Naval Intelligence Professionals (NIP) is a tax-exempt educational and charitable Foundation. Through the Rear Admiral Sumner Shapiro Scholarship Program, NIP recognizes future leaders who’ve exhibited exceptional potential to contribute to naval intelligence and related national security goals.

The Secretary of the Navy, Carlos Del Toro, officially signed the paperwork, reclassifying Information Warfare Officers from Restricted Line officers to “Line officers performing information warfare duties.”  

Donations will directly contribute to NIP's mission of promoting the vital work of Naval Intelligence.

Congratulations to Rear Admiral Tom Hendershedt for his selection for promotion to Rear Admiral (Upper half), and to Captain Ben Snell (1830/Navy Intelligence) and Captain Erin Acosta (1800/Navy Oceanography) for their selection for promotion to Rear Admiral (Lower half).

As a sign of continued support and forward progress on NIP’s Project 2032 effort, two Memorandums of Agreement (MOAs) were signed in late October—one between ONI and the Naval History and Heritage Command (NHHC) and one between ONI and NIP.

A large number of distinguished Naval Intelligence professionals gathered at the National Maritime Intelligence Center on 30 October 2024 to honor the late Paul Lowell as he was inducted onto the Naval Intelligence Wall of Honor. 

NIP held its annual general meeting and fall luncheon on 25 October 2024 at the Army Navy Country Club in Arlington, Virginia. The turnout was fantastic, with over 120 members and guests in attendance.

Against the backdrop of a fire truck with its ladder raised and a large American flag waving in the wind, hundreds of runners gathered on the morning of 22 September in Oakton, Virginia for the annual Travis Manion Foundation (TMF) 9/11 Heroes Run.

ONI held its annual wreath-laying ceremony at the National Maritime Intelligence Center 9/11 Remembrance Garden in Suitland, Maryland on the morning of 9/11 to honor the eight ONI shipmates who were working in CNO-IP and perished in the terrorist attack on the Pentagon on September 11, 2001.

The Office of the Senior Enlisted Advisor to the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff announced today that Navy Command Master Chief Jason "JR" Reynolds, currently assigned as command master chief, Office of Naval Intelligence, Washington, D.C., has been selected to replace Army Command Sgt. Maj. Thomas Baird as command senior enlisted leader for the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency, Springfield, Virginia.

Vice Admiral Kelly Aeschbach turned over the reins of Naval Information Forces Command to Vice Admiral Michael Vernazza in a packed ceremony in Suffolk, Virginia on 26 July 2024.

In May, the NIP Board unanimously approved the nominations for Colonel Aaron Tooke, USMCR and Master Gunnery Sergeant (Ret) Scott Stalker to join the Board, representing our U.S. Marine intelligence professionals.

Major General Melvin “Jerry” Carter has been nominated to be promoted to Lieutenant General and assigned as the Marine Corps’ next Deputy Commandant for Information (DCI). If confirmed, Carter will be the fourth DCI since the position was established in 2017.

The Office of Naval Intelligence’s Lieutenant Commander Dane Holtmeyer took action, literally, to raise money for this year’s Naval Intelligence Officer Dining-In—by soliciting pledges* for the Nashville Country Music Marathon he was planning to run on 27 April 2024.

Lou Conter passed away on 1 April 2024 in Grass Valley, California. He had been an eyewitness to key events during World War II, Korea, and Vietnam. From his enlistment in 1939 to retirement in 1967, he rose in the ranks from apprentice seaman to lieutenant commander. He stood the watch and persevered in our nation’s crises, giving all of us an example “to always do our best at all jobs” when our nation calls. He is one of many intelligence professionals who leaves us a rich legacy of service and model to follow.
