Janes U.S. hosted an extremely informative and engaging event for the NIP Capital Chapter on 23 April 2025 in Arlington, Virginia, with over 30 NIP members attending. Jack McNulty, Director, U.S. Department of the Navy for Janes, provided opening remarks before introducing the analyst briefings. Claire Chu provided an overview of China’s commercial shipping fleet supporting the PLAN’s strategic sealift capabilities. Peter Drucker discussed China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) and the PRC’s ambitions for geopolitical dominance, and Dan Wasserbly wrapped up the presentations by talking about tradecraft and how a commercial company collects intelligence. Each briefer also took questions from the audience. NIP Capital Chapter president, CDR James Martin, provided some perspective on the value of the evening’s discussions, commenting that, “Much like Naval Intelligence, for over a century, Janes has fused together multiple sources of intelligence, including open-source collection, commercial imagery, and signals intelligence, and a vast network of knowledgeable contacts in government and the commercial sector to do all-source assessments. This is a unique opportunity for us to leverage their experience and tradecraft.”
Janes graciously provided light refreshments for all who attended and included a raffle for a few items: a Janes branded coffee mug, a bottle of Grog found in the dusty basement corner of Janes’ UK office, and – perhaps best of all – a 1915 Janes Fighting Ships book, which Peter McGee won. Janes also gifted NIP Chair Vice Admiral (Ret) Bob Sharp a 1927 edition of Janes Fighting Ships in recognition of his leadership in the art and science of naval warfare. The members then mingled with Janes’ analysts and socialized among each other for the remainder of the evening.
Many thanks to Jack McNulty for organizing a fantastic event! It is worth noting that Jack served as an infantry officer in the U.S. Marine Corps and is a proud member of NIP.
