TAPS: CMC William “Sam” Houston, one of last ONI/NIS Enlisted Investigators, passes away at age 85.

Command Master Chief “Sam” Houston, one of the last ONI/NIS Enlisted Investigators (NEC 9592), passed away at his home in San Antonio TX of 7 July 2022 at age 85. He is survived by Bernice, his wife of 62 years, five children, eighteen grandchildren, and four great grandchildren.

Sam was designated a 9592 Enlisted Investigator with ONI/NIS in the early 1960s and assigned to the NIS Office in Saigon (with his wife and two children). At that time the office consisted of two civilian NIS Special Agents and two Enlisted Investigators. He served a subsequent tour with NISO San Diego. 

After the 9592 program was discontinued in 1970, Sam served tours as Command Master Chief of the USS John F. Kennedy as well as Command Master Chief for the Human Resources Management Center in San Diego. He retired in 1977 and subsequently held positions in both local and federal government service, including 11 years overseas as a federal civil servant.
