NIP 2016 Golf Tourney Hits Them Straight and Long!

(The NIP 2016 Golf Tournament was held at the course favored by many Presidents. Andrews Air Force Base has three courses: The East Course (1956) and the West Course (1961) were designed by Frank Murray and Russell Roberts, while Brian Ault oversaw the South Course in 1998. The club also offers all the amenities, including the cheerful staff, golf shop, practice facilities, and up-to-date fitness center).

The Naval Intelligence Professionals Foundation (NIF) Golf Tournament was held at Andrews Air Force Base, Camp Springs, MD on Friday, 16 September, 2016. The tourney was held on the Friday after Labor Day for the 5th consecutive year. NIPF receives sensational support from the AAFBGC Staff, particularly our POC for five years running, Cindy Heller.

Net proceeds from the event are donated to benefit the NIPF RADM Sumner Shapiro Scholarship Fund.

The Scholarship Program was initiated in 1988 by RADM (Ret.) Sumner “Shap” Shapiro (Director of Naval Intelligence, 1978-1982), and honors Naval Intelligence Professionals by providing financial assistance to college-bound children of active and reserve service members and to enlisted personnel pursuing higher education.

For this year’s event, the Shotgun start began on the South Course at 9:30 AM. Weather is always beautiful for these outings, and the best-value registration fee at Andrews includes the Greens Fee, Power Cart, an unlimited number of Range Balls with which to warm up, on-course beverages of all types with Luncheon and Door Prizes. There are also awards and recognition for Team Low Scores as well as two Closest-to-the-Pin and two Longest Drive award opportunities.

For the second year in a row, all participants leveraged the ease of pre-registration and payment via the transformed Naval Intelligence Professionals website. http://www.navintpro.org

Nearly seventy players joined this year, including two foursomes each from corporate sponsors GDIT (Fairfax, VA) and FULCRUM (Centerville, VA), raising nearly three thousand dollars to support the RADM Sumner “Shap” Shapiro Scholarship Fund.

The highly competitive format is a traditional speed-of-play-conscious Florida Scramble modified to permit a maximum score of Bogey on each hole.

Special moments on the course in team play:

Team Barkell’s score was 11 under Par at 61. All those years on the ANCC Golf and Greens committee by Rich and Ben paid off!

Team Epley’s score was one shot back at minus 10; 62. Impressive competition!

Jim Kelly's Team was 3rd place at 63. He was joined by Eric Utegaard, Chris Feeney and Ric Humphries.

First place team was led by Rich Barkell, who was joined by Ben Romero, Jim Hull, and Steve Carrier. They were clearly the team to beat with Rich Barkell capturing the longest drive on Hole #1, and his partner Steve Carrier grabbing closest-to-the-pin on Hole #3.

Second place team was led by OPNAV’s Todd Epley, joined by Charlie Moss, Travis Rogers and Russ Powell.

Invictus International Consulting President and CEO Jim Kelly grabbed longest drive honors on Hole #14 while GDIT’s Marc Snyder took closest-to-the-pin on hole #15.

It is not too soon to start planning for next year! SAVE THE DATE for next year’s tournament!
