Fellow Intelligence Professionals,

Our active, reserve and civilian Naval Intelligence professionals continue to excel.  I can’t remember a time in my career when our community has been engaged in so many and such varied operations and initiatives as we are today.  On a daily basis, our shipmates assigned to Navy and Joint special warfare and expeditionary warfare commands are conducting exciting, fast paced and nationally-significant operations forward.  Whether hunting Al-Shabaab terrorists in the Horn of Africa, fighting the Taliban and other extremists in the Hindu Kush, analyzing naval activity in the western Pacific, testing autonomous and unmanned underwater vehicles in the Caribbean, or countering 21st century piracy, the community is performing brilliantly.

We are also actively engaged in, and in some aspects leading, a dramatic transformation of the U.S. Navy from an industrial age maritime power to a prominent and dominant component of our nation’s warfighting arsenal.  After considerable analysis, dialogue, and consideration, the CNO has decided to execute a number of initiatives that will directly impact the future of our community and profession.  In this issue, JR Reddig has included a recap of my speech at the NIP annual luncheon and two additional articles.  My intent is for these articles to help fill in some of the details regarding recent developments and the future of Naval Intelligence.  My speech lays out the philosophical foundation for information transformation across the Navy while the two articles provide greater detail concerning specific organizational changes we are implementing.

For this audience, perhaps the most significant initiative is establishment of the Navy Information Dominance Corps.  Our Naval Intelligence community will continue to exist as a distinct entity, but it will now become part of a larger and more comprehensive “Corps” of communities that share common interests and a common information dominance mission.  As you read these articles, I believe you will find we have a unique opportunity to elevate the importance of, and strengthen Naval Intelligence, as well as our affiliated information communities.

I am inspired by the courage and commitment of our professionals, passionate about the tremendous opportunities for their future careers, and thankful for the honor of being a member of a team of world-class intelligence experts who are excelling every single day.
